SCAMS, SCAMS, and more SCAMS! Here is another one that we discovered. Scammers have been posting fake rental properties, trying to entice would-be renters into sending them funds, purportedly for rental application fees, rent, and other bogus charges. These scams can take place on VRBO, Airbnb, Craig’s List, or any website advertising rental properties. Especially with summer vacation season approaching, be aware of scams and take the proper precautions. Follow these steps as a guide.

Common signs of a scam-

• Incorrect or unusual spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
• More information provided than usual, or inconsistent information
• A request for you to communicate offsite.
• A request to pay by certified check, cashier's check, or unsecured wire transfer.
• A request to leave a listing platform (like Vrbo or Airbnb) to make a payment.
• Questionable property description and untrustworthy photos. The general rule with any vacation rental listing is that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
• No comments in the inquiry, or comments that don't match your property.
• Urgent timelines, threatening language, and ultimatums (for example, they’ll say “If you don’t pay by the end of the day, you’ll lose your place”)
• The host’s or property manager’s name is different from the listing
