No matter your profession, divorce can be extremely mentally, emotionally, and physically taxing. In best case scenarios, both parties want the process to conclude amicably, quickly, and cheaply. When things turn ugly, everything surrounding the lives of litigants often suffers, including their children, relationships with family and friends, and careers. You bet it's f______ing complicated.

Child support merely represents the costs that come with raising children. It is not to punish parents, but to support the fact that children should not be the economic victims of divorce or out-of-wedlock birth. When a parent treats their obligation to financially support their children vindictively, it hurts children. It was great that the people in this article found a way to turn this spiteful act by an estranged father into a way to help victims of abuse.

According to this article, in China, "joint custody is rare -- the common thinking is that 'after a family breakup, the children should go with one parent rather than with both parents.'" This policy perversely incentivizes self-help in the form of child abduction.

Thankfully, the same is not the case in New Jersey. In New Jersey joint custody is common while sole custody is rare. Parents litigating a custody issue are encouraged by the Courts to jointly determine a custody arrangement and to make major decisions for the children in a way that works best for that family. The Court only steps in when one or both parents are determined to be unfit, or when fit parents are unable to otherwise agree on what is in the best interests of the children.
