Maine is home to the eerie "Old York Gaol", one of the country's oldest surviving jails. Sitting on top of Gaol Hill in York, this old jail has a stone cellblock from 1720 that was built using timbers first cut in 1656. When you walk inside, you move through tight, dark cells that once held pirates, debtors, and thieves. You can step into the warden’s room above and see iron-barred doors, old carvings scratched into the walls, and a cold debtor’s cell that feels frozen in time. The gaol ran for more than 150 years before turning into a boarding house, and in 1900 it became a museum. Today it’s part of the Museums of Old York and still filled with original items from its long, rough past. It is currently open Thursday - Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm.

Maine's Nubble Lighthouse all dressed up for Christmas is one of the prettiest winter sights you’ll find anywhere in New England. Each year, the Cape Neddick Light Station in York is wrapped in hundreds of bright white Christmas lights that trace the lighthouse tower, the keeper’s house, and the fences around the island. The lights can be seen clearly from Sohier Park across the water, where they shine and reflect off the ocean below. First built in 1879, the lighthouse is still active today, helping guide ships along this rocky stretch of coast, and it remains one of the most photographed places in the state. The holiday lights usually come on around Thanksgiving and stay lit through early January, turning this famous lighthouse into a timeless New England Christmas scene by the sea.
