In Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, a family of five recently became the next stewards of 9.4 acres along North Bear Creek.

When it came time to make an offer, the parents were invited to write a letter introducing their family to the current steward. Instead, they handed the task to their three children.

Their letters were filled with dreams of exploring the woods, jumping into the creek, catching lightning bugs, and spending evenings together in the little cabin.

For now, there are no grand plans. Just time to wander, swim, observe, and slowly become familiar with the land.

Over the years, this place will become part of their family’s story, just as they become part of its own.

Years before its new owners ever walked Stone’s Throw, they were already practicing the kind of life this place was built to hold.

They had spent years living alongside one another, learning how to share resources, responsibilities, privacy, and everyday life.

Now, they are the stewards of 22 acres at the gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, including the Kinship, a naturally built ceremonial space shaped from local and reclaimed materials through the work of many hands.

The Little Farm by the Sea has the bones of a working farm, and the setting for a pretty good life.

Just outside Hoquiam, Washington, 117 acres stretch across pasture, forest, wetlands, and river habitat, with the Pacific coast close by.

There’s an original farmhouse, guest cabin, historic barns, and established livestock infrastructure. More than a decade of regenerative stewardship has created a strong foundation for raising animals, growing food, hosting friends and family, and spending your days closely connected to the land.

Be Easy Farm has been sold.

What started as open pasture became a living mosaic of food forests, willow groves, wildlife ponds, perennial gardens, and pathways. A handcrafted straw-bale home rose at its center, built with friends and finished using clay gathered from the property.

More than a decade later, the farm has found its next stewards. We’re honored to have helped bring them together.

In the days since Wendell Berry’s passing, we have been reflecting on how deeply his life and words have shaped our work at Latitude.

He reminded us that stewardship begins with knowing where we are. To remain in a place long enough to learn its soils, waters, seasons, histories, limits, and gifts. To become patient enough to work with what is already there. And ultimately, to let familiarity deepen into responsibility.

Berry leaves behind a legacy of good examples, and an invitation to become one ourselves. He lives on in the work, in his words on the page, and in the memories of those who knew and learned from him.

Sound on to hear his voice.
