The Rose Parade. The Portland Marathon. Film shoots. All kinds of events take place on Portland's streets and sidewalks. For the last 19 years, Allison Madsen has been helping them run safe and sound — with minimal disruption to the rest of the city.

As special events coordinator at Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), she negotiates with event organizers, Portland Police, Portland Fire & Rescue, TriMet and other partners to obtain the city permits that make the magic happen.

We caught up with her as she's getting ready for one of the biggest events of the year — the Portland Rose Festival.

Yesterday, subcontractors finished striping and adding street markings around the new mini roundabout at NE 81st Avenue and Halsey Street, the final step before opening the roundabout!

This is part of the NE Halsey Street (80th to 92nd avenues) - Safety and Access to Transit Project, which is working to make it easier and safer for people to walk, bike and roll to and from the NE 82nd Avenue MAX station. NE Halsey Street was among Portland's deadliest corridors for traffic crashes and is now part of the city's High Crash Network.

The contractor has been busy coordinating several subcontractors who have been working at different points along the project. That means some areas may look quiet while crews are focused elsewhere or while a specific subcontractor is scheduled for another day. We’re on track to complete the project later this summer!

In May, Pacific Power energized the new poles, Prairie Electric completed streetlight work, crews did prep work for paving the roundabout and then paved the north half of it, and Nu Wave Concrete formed and poured ADA ramps and traffic islands.

Here’s what’s coming:
• Striping work on NE Jonesmore Street and the NE Halsey and Jonesmore streets intersection in mid- June.
• The underground work for the new rapid‑flashing beacon is complete at NE 88th and Halsey. Next, we’ll be installing the pole and activating the signal.
• Long‑line striping on NE Halsey Street between NE Jonesmore Street and NE 92nd Avenue
• We’ll be microsurfacing to smooth the pavement on the NE Halsey Street bridge over I-84, and installing protective fencing, adding new lane striping, and separating the two-way bike lane.

The total budget for this project is $7.7 million dollars. Sources include a Metro/Federal Regional Flexible Fund grant ($2.4 million), a federal American Rescue Plan Act grant ($2.58 million), a federal earmark grant ($1 million), an additional Metro grant ($900,000), ODOT bridge funds ($412,000), PBOT General Transportation Revenue ($180,000), Fixing Our Streets ($250,000).

Speaking of SW Dosch Road...

Traffic Alert: SW Dosch Road CLOSED between SW Newby Terrace & SW Hamilton Street due to an active sinkhole about 15' wide x 12' long x 12' deep. The sinkhole was discovered by PBOT crews while they were working on repaving the street. Travelers need to detour via SW Redondo Avenue for their safety.

Crews began work on SW Dosch Road yesterday, repairing and resurfacing an estimated 3 lane miles between between SW Patton Road and SW Doschdale Drive thanks to Fixing Our Streets. SW Dosch connects neighborhoods across Southwest Portland and areas of the southwestern part of the region.
 
The paving crews expect to work from about 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays. The work is expected to be completed by Tuesday, June 23.
 
Expect delays, travel cautiously, observe all closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. Local access to residences and businesses will remain available. 

Check trimet.org for impacts to public transit service.
This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

When crews wrap up on SW Dosch, they’ll be moving to N Killingsworth Street between Borthwick and Williams avenues and then to NE Sacramento Street between 132nd and 148th avenues. Check our basic road maintenance schedule at the link in our bio to see where else we’re working this summer.

Shh... our little secret: very few crowds on the Tram after 7 pm. Which is also a great time to catch the golden hour light on the city, sunset on the mountains, and maybe grab a bite and a drink in South Waterfront.

Are you new to town, or new to cycling in Portland? Want to explore some of the best low-stress bike routes in Mill Park, Hazelwood and Centennial? Then join our New to Portland ride on Thursday, June 11!

We will gather at the East Portland Community Center (740 SE 106th Ave) at 5:30 p.m. and the ride will start at 6:00 p.m. The ride will end in the same spot. This is a moderate-pace, no drop ride, and will be approximately 8 miles. Free and open to everyone!

Safety upgrades are coming to SE Stark and Washington streets, 92nd - 108th avenues!

Drop in this Wednesday, June 3 at the East Portland Community Center (740 SE 106th St.) from 1 - 5 p.m. to see designs created from community feedback gathered last fall and winter.

🚨 Heads up! Steel Bridge lifts tomorrow (June 2) will affect MAX and bus service.

🚆 MAX trains cannot cross the Steel Bridge during bridge lifts.

🚌 Buses that normally use the Steel and Burnside bridges will use alternate routes when possible.

⏱️ Expect delays Tuesday afternoon and/or evening.
