In 2018, an orca named Tahlequah gave birth to a calf who died shortly after. Instead of letting her baby sink to the ocean floor, she carried her lifeless calf for 17 days and more than 1,000 miles. Scientists called it a “tour of grief,” a behavior seen in some animals who, like us, cannot bear to let go.
Tahlequah showed the world what every bereaved mother knows: love does not end when a baby dies. The ache to hold, to carry, to keep them close is instinctual.
For human mothers, this grief is often unseen or minimized. But just as Tahlequah carried her calf across the sea, bereaved mothers carry their babies forever—in memory, in love, and in every step forward.
If you are carrying love and grief today, know you are not alone.
