According to the USCIS, the definition of Good Moral Character (GMC) for Naturalization purposes is the character which "measures up to the standards of average citizens of the community in which the applicant resides." This is the viewpoint with which the USCIS reviews the applicant's past history during the Naturalization process. The more evidence you provide to highlight your positive character, such as being a productive member of society, supporting your family, volunteering in the community, lack of a criminal record, etc., the more likely it is that the USCIS will find that you meet the GMC requirement.

§Firstly, the most serious crimes, such as murder and other aggravated felonies, will automatically and permanently bar a person from being considered to have good moral character.
§Secondly, other convictions will not be permanent bars to good moral character, but they do make the immigrant who committed them deportable. Here again, waiting for time to pass won't make that fact go away. Some of these crimes include domestic violence, drugs, or even a violation of protective order.
§Thirdly, you must remain guilt-free for the entirety of the GMC period and ensure that you haven't committed any crimes that could render you deportable. It's better to wait 5 years, however that does not imply that no one should apply within five years of committing a crime.
