I have been involved with the Port Arthur Blue Santa program since approximately 2006. I recently came across the Civilian Service Medal that Chief Mark Blanton gave me in 2011. After Hurricane Rita, the Blue Santa program was in jeopardy. I, and many others refused to let the Blue Santa program disappear. Our Law Firm started having auctions at our annual Holiday parties where we would raise $10,000 to $12,000 for Blue Santa to purchase gifts for area children. Back in the early days, this was our entire budget for gifts. We would provide gifts for approximately 100 area children. Fast forward.
This morning the Blue Santa program received a donation from Valero in the amount of $50,000. This along with many other donations from area businesses has allowed the Blue Santa program to expand. This year, the Blue Santa program is expected to provide gifts to approximately 550 area children. Being a part of the Board of the Port Arthur Blue Santa program has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever been a part of. Thanks to all the area individuals and companies that donate their time and money, to all the volunteers that help shop and distribute gifts each year, and to everyone at the Port Arthur Police Department that helps makes this program so successful.
