📝I’m excited to share my latest article in The Legal Intelligencer, When Judges Can’t Judge: The Human Cost of Mandatory Sentences.

👩‍⚖️What happens when the law removes discretion from the people best equipped to deliver justice?

⚖️This piece explores how mandatory minimum sentencing laws shift power away from judges and toward rigid statutes and prosecutorial decisions. Often, this leads to outcomes that don’t fit the facts and specific circumstances of a case. It highlights the human impact of one-size-fits-all sentencing, the unintended consequences for defendants, and why flexibility in the justice system is integral.

Two days until launch day!

I am so excited to be launching Voices of the System, a criminal justice podcast launching this Wednesday, January 28th.

As an advocate for criminal justice reform, I am eager to shed light on the flaws of the current system. Hear first-hand stories about heart-wrenching trauma being endured behind prison walls, wrongful and unlawful convictions, and inspirational movements trying to facilitate change. Challenge what you thought you knew about the criminal justice system.

On October 30th, I was honored to be on a panel of like-minded criminal justice reform advocates at an event sponsored by Tyree Wallace, the SRC (systemic reformative change foundation) and Mann Up. The event helped emphasize the negative impact that prisons run by the Pennsylvania Department of corrections are having on incarcerated people who are supposed to be helped and supported. The discussion was centered around the trauma experienced behind prison walls and lack of appropriate rehabilitative resources. The SRC hopes to have more events to create transparency and accountability to create positive change within the prison system.

On October 29, I was honored by the Montgomery Bar Association with a Certificate of Recognition for nearly 200 hours of pro bono legal work this past year. I dedicated my time to supporting civil rights clients, as well as a criminal defense client pursuing post-conviction appeals.

It was a privilege to be recognized at the reception and to stand alongside Montgomery Bar Association President Seth Wilson and fellow honoree David Trevaskis. I’m grateful for the opportunity to use my skills to help those who need it most, and I look forward to continuing this work.

Sharing the Philadelphia Inquirer story about a federal civil rights lawsuit that I filed earlier this week against Borough of Sharon Hill Police Officers in Delaware County who hit my client with their police car, beat him, and failed to provide him with medical care afterwards. While my client was wanted on a warrant, the police were wrong for their inhumane behavior. Lawsuits like these need to be pursued to hold the officers accountable and to make the public aware of their misconduct.

At the time, Stephen Bytheway was wanted in Montgomery County for allegedly masterminding a violent burglary in which police say he tortured a homeowner with a blow torch, court records show.

I am excited to share my latest Legal Intelligencer column pertaining to the unnecessary suffering of incarcerated individuals due to lack of proper medical care that is the norm in so many of our state and local Pennsylvania prisons. The torture endured by my clients and so many other incarcerated men and women is incomprehensible, and accountability should be taken.

On July 10, I had the honor and pleasure of attending an art show at the Barnes Museum called "Where I'm From" that featured artwork from incarcerated men and women. The event started with a very moving program featuring speakers from the Mural Arts Program at SCI Phoenix. The common thread and message from the speakers was that art brings people together, is healing and restorative, and helps incarcerated individuals feel hopeful, positive, and connected.

I am sharing photos of some of the art that was created by these very talented individuals. One of the pieces depicting Jesus was painted by my client. The very creative pieces allowed the artists' voices to be heard and the guests to see them as human beings. Seeing incarcerated individuals as talented humans gives them an opportunity to thrive.
