As the holiday season approaches sms as coronavirus continues to loom, many consumers are likely taking their shopping online. As a consumer protection law firm, we always encourage consumers to always use caution when making online purchases, and follow these tips to avoid becoming a victim of fraud:
💳 Only shop from trusted websites / retailers.
💳 If the website is unfamiliar to you, research it online before making a purchase! Google searches can often uncover a possible history of scam reports.
💳 You can also search the Better Business Bureau (also known as “BBB”) website for the company to see if they are an accredited business with the BBB and to see if they have any consumer reviews.
💳 Only use websites with “https” in the URL. These websites have privacy protection installed, and will normally show a small lock icon in front of the web address.
💳 Don't shop online while accessing a public Wi-Fi network.
****💳 Use a credit card, as most banks offer greater liability coverage for credit cards over debit cards!!!!!!!****
💳 Consumers should check their credit card and bank statements for any unauthorized or suspicious transactions at least monthly!
💳 NOTE: Consumers generally only have a limited window to dispute unauthorized transactions. If you don’t find out that a transaction was not authorized by you until it is too late then you may potentially lose your right to dispute such transaction. Thus, Always check your statements and transaction history monthly to verify that all the charges reflected on your account are correct and accurate. If not, then contact your banking institution immediately and report such unauthorized activity.
Stay safe while shopping online throughout this holiday season!
