Too many people in Indiana put off estate planning because of myths they’ve heard. Let’s set the record straight:
👉 Myth #1: Estate planning is only for the wealthy.
Truth: Estate planning isn’t just about money—it’s about protecting your family and ensuring your wishes are followed. An estate plan makes sure the right people receive what you own. More importantly, it lets you propose guardians for minor children and provide written instructions about your medical care and treatment if you become unable to communicate or make decisions. In Indiana, everyone over 18 should have an estate plan.
👉 Myth #2: A will is all I need.
Truth: A will is an important part of your estate plan, but it doesn’t take care of everything. Think of your will as a set of instructions—it explains who should receive your belongings after you pass and names the person you trust to fulfil your wishes. However, a complete estate plan usually includes a few more helpful tools, like a trust, a power of attorney, and a health care directive. These documents work together protect you while you’re living, and ease the burden on your loved ones when they need it the most.
👉 Myth #3: If I die without a will, my spouse gets everything.
Truth: Many people believe that if someone dies without a will, their spouse automatically gets everything. But in Indiana, that’s not always the case. The law looks at who else is in the family, like children or parents, and divides the belongings based on those relationships. Sometimes the spouse shares the estate with the children or other relatives. Having a will guarantees your wishes are clear and can help avoid surprises or confusion for your loved ones.
💡 Bottom line: Don’t let myths stop you from planning. Estate planning gives you peace of mind and gives your family clarity when it matters most.
