It is with profound sadness that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office informs our community of the loss of Correctional Officer Ryan Marietti.

In the early morning hours of August 28, 2026, Ryan was involved in a solo-vehicle accident on Highway 50 near Strawberry, CA. This tragic accident took the life of a member of our Sheriff’s Office family and a valued member of our community.

Ryan began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in December of 2024, serving at both the Placerville and South Lake Tahoe Jails. Among his many attributes, Ryan demonstrated a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a genuine desire to grow within the Sheriff’s Office. He had set his sights on advancing through the ranks and building a career in service to our community.

Prior to his employment with the Sheriff’s Office, Ryan was a member of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 457, where he excelled and proudly represented the Post as a member of its competition team. Ryan was also an alumnus of Ponderosa High School, graduating in 2023.

Ryan will be greatly missed—not only by his family and friends, but by his EDSO family and the community he proudly chose to serve.

It is with great sadness that the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of our beloved retired K9 Bak. Bak retired from service in 2020 following the promotion of his partner, Sgt. Hamon. In April of 2025, K9 Bak was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphatic cancer. Through the community’s amazing support, Bak underwent 6-months of IV chemotherapy, extending his life and allowing him to enjoy many more walks and escapades at the baseball fields. Bak passed away peacefully at his home on August 27th, 2026.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office would like to introduce the newest member of the High-Tech Crimes Unit, Electronics Storage Detection (ESD) K9 Cooper.

K9 Cooper is trained to locate electronic devices by detecting a chemical compound found in electronic components. This allows him to locate all types of electronics, including intentionally hidden devices, submerged underwater, or otherwise overlooked during a search.

Cooper was awarded to the EDSO by the United States Secret Service. Detective Cuddeback, Cooper’s assigned handler is assigned to the Sheriff’s Office High Tech Crimes Unit, where he along with the other members of the unit, investigate crimes involving digital evidence, with a focus on crimes against children and human trafficking.

The EDSO High Tech Crimes Unit was selected alongside just 13 other law enforcement agencies from across the nation to receive an ESD K9. The agencies were selected based on their work and dedication to investigating crimes involving digital evidence and their continued efforts to combat online predators, child exploitation, and human trafficking.

Cooper and Detective Cuddeback recently completed an intensive multi week training with Jordan Detection K9 at the U.S. Secret Service National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) in Alabama. Cooper was trained by Todd Jordan, a retired firefighter and investigator who was instrumental in the investigation that led to the arrest of former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle. Mr. Jordan now trains electronic detection K9s and their handlers for law enforcement agencies across the country.

Cooper will primarily be used during investigations involving crimes against children, child exploitation, and human trafficking, as well as other serious crimes where detectives believe electronic evidence may be hidden.

EDSO wishes to thank the United States Secret Service, U.S. Secret Service Sacramento Field Office, National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI), and Jordan Detection K9 for their support in bringing Cooper and this new resource to El Dorado County.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy begins August19th, 2026. This is a free training program designed to familiarize participants with the many aspects of law enforcement, and the role the Sheriff’s Office plays in the community. This program meets at the EDSO Public Safety Facility and runs 13 consecutive weeks on Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm. Each week will bring a different instructor to discuss a variety of law enforcement topics and provide a behind the scenes look at the various EDSO units, equipment, and facilities. Another bonus of this program includes an opportunity to take a ride-a-long with an EDSO Deputy.
Space is limited so it’s important to register as soon as possible. Due to adult themes and content, the academy is only for ages 18 and older. THIS IS A MUST FOR EVERY CITIZEN OF EL DORADO COUNTY!!
