HBCU "Essential Closed" Says Bankruptcy Judge

Saint Augustine's University, the 158-year-old HBCU in Raleigh, will not offer classes or educational programs during the fall 2026 semester as it works through bankruptcy and an uncertain future. The decision marks a reversal for Saint Augustine's. University leaders had planned to launch eight online, nondegree programs in September, according to The News & Observer. However, Bankruptcy Judge David Warren questioned whether the financially troubled HBCU could deliver on promises made to prospective students. He also raised concerns about spending limited resources on classes while the institution remains in bankruptcy.

Bankrupt W**d Company Lays Off 86 People at Vineland Grow Sites

Two cannabis grow sites in South Jersey will close their doors in October, laying off 86 staff members as multistate operator the Cannabist Company files for chapter 15 bankruptcy, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The cultivation facilities — located at 17 W. Park Ave. and 1560 N. West Blvd. in Vineland — will close on Oct. 11, laying off nearly all of the Cannabist’s cultivation and manufacturing employees in New Jersey according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with the state. In its bankruptcy filings, the company stated that due to “regulatory, industry, and financial challenges,” it was facing a severe liquidity crisis and “unable to meet its financial obligations as they become due.” Since the Cannabist Company is also filing for bankruptcy in Canada, this case is poised to be the first time a U.S. Bankruptcy Court recognizes a foreign insolvency proceeding related to a ma*****na business, despite cannabis remaining federally illegal.

Hot off the ABI Insolvency Informer Press:

Mortgage Rates Rise to Highest Level in Nearly a Year, Causing Homebuyers to Pause

Mortgage rates rose last week to the highest level since August 2025, and that caused homebuyer demand for loans to pull back, CNBC reported. Refinance demand, however, moved higher. Total mortgage application volume dropped 2.7% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances, $832,750 or less, increased to 6.65% from 6.58% last week, with points rising to 0.67 from 0.64, including the origination fee, for loans with a 20% down payment.

Marathon’s Steak and Lobster House Looks to Keep Doors Open Amid Chapter 11 Proceedings

One of the Middle Keys’ staple eateries will look to stay open while restructuring its debts, as the Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this spring, KeysWeekly.com reported. According to court records first filed in April by restaurant owner Maria Ely and attorney Chad Van Horn in the Florida Southern District Court, the business lists a total of $6.63 million in liabilities, including $2.76 million in claims by unsecured creditors.

Saks Officially Emerges from Chapter 11 Protection with Less Debt and a New Name

Saks Global, the parent company of Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman, officially emerged from chapter 11 bankruptcy Friday with fewer stores, less debt, a more focused strategy to pamper the affluent — and a new name, the Associated Press reported. The company said Friday that the new entity will be called Exemplar Luxury Group, and with an improved balance sheet, including a nearly 75% debt reduction and $500 million in extra financing. Its CEO, Geoffroy van Raemdonck, said the New York-based company is ready for its next chapter after navigating several tumultuous years.
