Urban League Movement

Ranked in three successive performance reviews as one of the nation’s highest performing affiliates, the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh was founded in 1918 with the shared National Urban League mission of enabling African-Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power, and civil rights. cans and other minorities, but no one is ever turned away, helping more than 20,000 individuals in Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties last year alone. As the largest comprehensive social service/civil rights organization in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Urban League helps others to help themselves through extra-curricular educational opportunities, health advocacy, housing counseling, parental education and support for early childhood and youth development, hunger prevention services, sustainable wage career preparation, and other programs that lead to improved ability to achieve economic empowerment and self-reliance. Ninety nine years of service to the African American community in our region has earned the Urban League the community’s trust. The Urban League’s voice has gained a reputation for untarnished credibility which we strive to use strategically in order to reduce structural barriers and improve access to opportunities for those we serve. The Mission of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh is to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power, and civil rights. Strategy & Vision Statement

The Urban League employs the following 5-point strategy, tailored to local needs, in order to implement our mission:

•Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment

We believe that it is imperative that the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh gathers resources to ensure social, political and economic justice for all Americans. The Urban League will provide bold leadership, innovative programs and policies to strengthen the region by helping African Americans reach their full potential. With the active engagement in the Pittsburgh community, the Urban League advocates economic opportunity and justice that leads to significant improvement in the quality of our lives.

On August 28, I’ll join civil rights leaders and thousands of Americans at the March on Washington.

We march not simply to honor the legacy of those who came before us, but to carry that legacy forward. We must defend the right to vote, protect equal opportunity, and demand economic dignity for all.

The work of democracy is never finished. Join us on August 28 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC

Today, the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh proudly celebrates National Nonprofit Day and the incredible organizations, leaders, volunteers, donors, and community partners who work every day to create stronger, more equitable communities.

For more than a century, the Urban League movement has been committed to empowering communities and changing lives through education, workforce development, economic opportunity, advocacy, and programs that help individuals and families thrive.
