Ciao, Torisky & O'Connor, LLC is proud to announce that on May 22, 2019, after a five-day trial, an Allegheny County jury returned a verdict in the amount of $2.1 million dollars for one of our seriously injured motor vehicle crash victims.
The case involved a local man who was essentially rendered a paraplegic following a head on crash caused by a negligent driver. The victim had suffered from multiple sclerosis before the crash, but his serious fracture injuries took away his freedom and changed his and his wife’s lives forever. The defense eventually admitted negligence at trial, but refused to recognize the seriousness of this devastating injury until a thoughtful and deliberate jury from Allegheny County decisively ruled in the victim's favor.
“When we act negligently, we should take responsibility for our actions - as well as the consequences of that negligence. When that doesn’t happen… it can have dire consequences for those refusing to take responsibility, and then our civil justice system becomes the forum for the resolution of that dispute. The evidence presented in court, including more than two days of compelling live testimony from experts, neurologists and orthopedic surgeons, showed with abundant clarity the life-altering injuries suffered by the victim and the permanent damages he and his wife sustained. Our client lost his freedom and this jury was committed to carefully weighing the evidence presented in order to put a price on that loss as the law allows" said the victim's lawyer, Gary Ciao.
The case was handled for over three years by our Attorney, Gary Ciao, and he along with our friend and seasoned advocate, Attorney Joshua P. Geist of the Pittsburgh Firm of Goodrich and Geist, masterfully tried the case to a momentous victory.
The nearly unanimous 12 person jury included future medical expenses, past and future pain and suffering, disfigurement and loss of society for the injured victim's wife, in their well-reasoned verdict.
