Some people find their calling early. For our partner Susan Paczak, that calling was right here at Abes Baumann. ⚖️

Susan’s journey with us actually started before she even finished law school. While studying at Duquesne, she worked as a paralegal and law clerk in our office, learning the ropes from the ground up.

Today, with over 30 years of experience, she is one of the most respected voices in Western PA for Veterans’ Benefits and Workers’ Comp.

Susan is not just an attorney; she is a Pitt and Duquesne alum who has dedicated her entire career to helping her neighbors navigate the toughest times of their lives. We are lucky she has been part of our family for so long! 🤝

Jim Burn, from our Abes Baumann team, is answering a question we often get from our Pittsburgh veteran community: "Can I get a rating for a condition that wasn't caused by combat?”

Under VA rules, you can claim Secondary Service Connection. If a condition you already have, like a knee injury, causes a new problem like nerve pain, the VA is legally required to consider it.

If you feel you are entitled to a secondary claim, feel free to contact Abes Baumann today:

This Memorial Day, our team had the honor of speaking at a local Memorial Day remembrance event to pause, reflect, and pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes. 🇺🇸

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us to ensure their names, their courage, and their sacrifices are never forgotten. Pittsburgh remembers. 🖤💛

There is a lot of talk about the VA changing the rules for sleep apnea. Jim Burn is here to clear up what is happening right now.

The 60-Second Verdict: If you have a service-connected diagnosis for sleep apnea, whether it is direct or secondary to something like PTSD, and you use a CPAP machine, you are currently entitled to a 50% rating.

Whether the rules change in the future or not, your right to these benefits exists today. Do not wait for a "potential" change to start your claim.

Jim Burn hears this concern every week: “Will the VA cut my rating if my medication is working?”

The 60-Second Verdict: You are entitled to due process.
Following the doctor’s orders should not result in a penalty. If the VA proposes a reduction to your benefits, we are here to fight it and preserve what you have earned.

Your fight is our fight. 🤜🤛

We were so moved to read about the incredible work being done by the chaplains at VA Pittsburgh. They are providing holistic support and crisis intervention for our local veterans.

At Abes Baumann, we see the legal side of the journey, but we know that emotional and mental well-being are just as vital to a veteran’s recovery. We are proud to have such a dedicated team of professionals serving our Pittsburgh community.
