Our hearts are heavy as we share news of the departure of Michael A. Beale, who left us on February 7, 2024. The loss of this extraordinary lawyer, founding partner, mentor, and friend leaves an unfillable void in our firm and the Arizona legal landscape. Mike's brilliance in the courtroom, unwavering principles, and larger-than-life personality shaped not only our practice but the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Mike's vision led to the establishment of Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart in 1995. He created a distinctive firm handling complex cases across tort law, medical malpractice, aviation law, products liability, and utility litigation. His reputation for excellence and fairness drew exceptional legal minds to join him, establishing what would become one of Arizona's most respected plaintiff law firms.
In the courtroom, Mike was simply masterful. Watching him navigate a case was witnessing legal artistry—his commanding knowledge of precedent, remarkable ability to read jurors, and steadfast ethical compass earned admiration throughout Arizona's judicial system. The profession recognized his extraordinary talents through numerous honors: inclusion in Best Lawyers of America for over three decades, his alma mater's Professional Achievement Award, and fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Before his illustrious legal career, Mike served honorably with the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon returning to civilian life, he completed his education at Arizona State University followed by law school at the University of Arizona. His professional journey began in 1968 at Jennings, Strouss, Salmon and Trask, where his exceptional abilities quickly elevated him to partnership before he ventured to create his own practice.
Beyond his formidable legal presence, Mike was a renaissance man of unexpected depth. Behind his rugged, robust demeanor lay a scholarly mind fascinated by history, particularly military conflicts from the Revolutionary War through Vietnam. He brought this same intensity to the rugby field, competing with legendary determination well past when most would have hung up their cleats. Whether in court or on the field, Mike approached life with unmatched passion.
Perhaps most memorable was Mike's extraordinary gift for storytelling and laughter. His tales, delivered with such infectious joy that he would begin laughing before reaching the punchline, inevitably left entire rooms in tears of mirth. This warmth extended to everyone in his orbit—partners, associates, and staff alike found in Mike a generous spirit who valued each person he encountered.
The entire firm extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have reached out with condolences and memories. Mike would want to be remembered not through ceremony, but through action. Honor him as he requested—create a memory inspired by his passions: enjoy a meal at his beloved Durants, contribute to St. Mary's Food Bank, play eighteen holes, or simply spend quality time with loved ones.
The legal profession has lost a titan, our firm has lost its cornerstone, and we have all lost an irreplaceable friend in Michael A. Beale.
