Such a pleasure and honor speaking today with Renee Hykel and Anu Thomas at the American Immigration Lawyers Association Philadelphia Chapter Conference on complex issues in naturalization (U.S. Citizenship applications). As we discussed today, the silver lining in all this madness is that there is a surge of demand among permanent residents to naturalize in order to protect themselves and their families, and to more fully participate in our democracy.

Thank you to .__ for writing and narrating this reel. Black History Month is a reminder that immigration and civil rights have always been deeply intertwined. The forced migration of Africans through slavery, followed by centuries of exclusionary laws, shaped the very foundations of U.S. immigration policy. It was the courage and resistance of Black communities that led to landmark changes—such as the Civil Rights
Movement and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965—opening lawful pathways for generations of immigrants worldwide.

Today, Afro-descendant immigrants continue to face barriers, yet they remain essential to the economic, cultural, and social fabric of this country. Honoring Black history means recognizing this struggle, protecting immigrant rights, and continuing the fight for justice,
dignity, and equality under the law.

Stunning decision from Texas District Judge Fred Biery. ordering the release of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, who was arrested by ICE while wearing a blue bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack, and his father, Adrian Cornejo Arias. From the order:

Civics lesson to the government: Administrative warrants issued by the executive branch to
itself do not pass probable cause muster. That is called the fox guarding the henhouse. The
Constitution requires an independent judicial officer.

Accordingly, the Court finds that the Constitution of these United States trumps this
administration’s detention of petitioner Adrian Conejo Arias and his minor son, L.C.R. The Great Writ
and release from detention are GRANTED pursuant to the attached Judgment.

Observing human behavior confirms that for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled
power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency. And
the rule of law be damned.

Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more orderly and humane policy than currently in place.

Philadelphia, September 17, 1787: “Well, Dr. Franklin, what do we have?” “A republic, if you
can keep it.”

With a judicial finger in the constitutional d**e,
It is so ORDERED.ion

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of justice and equality.
Dr. King believed that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere—a principle that strongly resonates in today’s immigration landscape. As immigration laws and policies continue to evolve, his message reminds us of the importance of due process, dignity, and equal protection under the law for immigrant communities. Honoring Dr. King means continuing to advocate for fairness, lawful pathways, and humane treatment for all.

This is the story of a promise with a happy ending.
Many years ago, Esmeralda left Peru, and life led her and her mother, Martha, a Peruvian national, down different paths. They had not lived together since 1999, but the love between them never faded.
Three years ago, Esmeralda stood by her grandmother — Martha’s mother — during her final days. In that deeply emotional moment, her grandmother made one last request:
that Esmeralda do everything possible to bring her mother to the United States and care for her.
Esmeralda made that promise from the depths of her heart.

Today, that promise has been fulfilled.
After years of waiting, challenges, and perseverance, Martha, a Peruvian citizen, finally received her green card and is now reunited with her daughter.
It was an honor for us to be part of the process that made this reunion possible.

Congratulations, Martha and Esmeralda.
A new chapter begins — filled with love, hope, and a promise kept. 💚✨

Fiona’s Immigrant Story:
I spent most of my life in the Philadelphia area, but I also had the unique opportunity to live in Argentina as a child. While attending an international school in Buenos Aires, I became fluent in Spanish and discovered the joy of connecting with people from all over the world. Immersed in such a diverse community, I developed a deep appreciation for cultural exchange and global understanding. This experience ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in immigration law.
My mother immigrated to the United States from Canada as a child, and although her process was far less complex than most, I grew up surrounded by stories of when and how each of my aunts and uncles received their green cards and, later, their citizenship. Our family has maintained deep ties to Canada, and I have always valued those connections as a reminder of the importance of honoring where we come from. These family experiences, combined with my own international upbringing, gave me a lasting respect for the courage and resilience of those who make the United States their home.
