At a spirited Thursday rally for school funding at the Key School in Philadelphia, ELC executive director Deborah Gordon Klehr said this:

"It’s time that our legislative leaders take their constitutional responsibility seriously and finally ensure a thorough and efficient system of public education where all of our children have access to quality public education. Our current system is disproportionately harming PA’s Black and Brown students and students living in poverty. In PA the students who need the most get the least based on where they live. That’s unconstitutional. And our case has the potential to change the trajectory for generations of students in Pennsylvania! But the legislature doesn’t have to wait for a court decision. The time to act is now. In this year’s budget, the legislature must adequately and equitably fund public education."

At the Clean Slate Initiative's first convening in Detroit this week, CLS Litigation Director Sharon Dietrich was recognized for her early role in the movement! She was honored along with other Clean Slate pioneers and friends: CLS alum Rebecca Vallas, Noella Sudbury, and Code for America.

Clean Slate is the sealing of criminal cases by automation. CLS helped pass the first Clean Slate law in Pennsylvania in 2018.

To date, more than 41 MILLION CASES have been sealed in Pennsylvania... and we are not done!

House Bill 1826, which would automatically seal most drug felonies after 10 years, is about to be filed any time now.

In addition, 8 more states have passed Clean Slate after PA: Utah, Michigan, Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and, most recently, Oklahoma and Colorado.

Says Sharon:
"I am so excited that this movement has caught fire like it has. The 100 million people with criminal records in this country have been held back way, way too long after they have served their sentences and pose no risk. We cannot stop until Clean Slate is in place in all 50 states, 3 territories, and the federal court system!"
