Today is Election Day. We here at Legis Group believe that voting is one of the most important civic responsibilities we have as Americans. Even if the candidate you personally believe in is not on the ballot, it is still important to get out and vote for the candidate that best aligns with your values. The decisions that politicians make can affect our lives for years to come.
One of our attorneys, Jeffery Young, Jr., knows this first hand. Prior to joining Legis Group, Jeff served as Legislatives Counsel in the Office of Philadelphia City Council President Darrell L. Clark. He says on voting: "in our representative democracy, voting is the most basic principle. Having worked in the public sector, I know first hand how our vote determines how our government allocates its resources. Every single vote matters as evidenced by well funded and organized efforts to suppress voting efforts. One vote has the ability to change outcomes for future generations."
While our actions we chose to take today may affect the outcome for our future generations, by participating in the voting process, we are also honoring our ancestors who fought so hard to ensure everyone had the right to vote. Nicholas Kamau, Board Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association and a partner at Legis Group has this to say about our civic duty: "As we embark on Election Day this year, I am reminded of the ancestors who were denied freedom, dignity and humanity. It was not until 1964, after centuries of blood sweat and tears that the right to vote became the law of the land. Failing to vote is tantamount to turning our backs on those who died so we could live with dignity and freedom. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!"
It is about remembering the past and honoring the future that we must reflect on today. Skipping out on voting simply because you're too busy, don't like the candidates, or any other reason is dishonoring our past, present, and future. Voting is more important now than it ever has been before. So get out and just vote.
