A reasonable accommodation is any change or adjustment to a job or work environment that allows an employee with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job, or to enjoy benefits and privileges of employment equal to those enjoyed by employees without disabilities. For a job applicant, an accommodation can enable the applicant to participate in the application process.

A reasonable accommodation can include, but isn’t limited to:
- Providing or modifying equipment or devices
- Job restructuring
- Part-time or modified work schedules
- Adjusting or modifying examinations, training materials, or policies
- Providing readers and interpreters

An employer is required to provide a reasonable accommodation to a qualified applicant or employee with a disability, unless doing so would cause an undue hardship on the employer. Under the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you have a disability if you have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity (such as hearing, seeing, speaking, walking, breathing, performing manual tasks, caring for oneself, learning, or working) or have a history of a disability.

In addition, both the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA require that you must satisfy the employer’s requirements for the job, and you must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. Essential functions are generally the core job duties that you are required to perform with or without the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.
