The newest episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Season 27, Episode 12: Hubris) is a scathing portrayal of how child abuse pediatrics operates across the country.

In the episode, a child abuse pediatrician diagnoses abuse without examining children, refuses to order testing that could rule out non-abusive causes, and alters medical records to support her conclusions. Her colleagues and the courts defer to her without question, resulting in wrongful child removals, wrongful convictions, and coerced plea deals.

The plot closely aligns with conduct challenged in several federal civil rights lawsuits involving leading child abuse pediatricians, including Dr. Channing Petrak (Krueger v. Petrak), Dr. Nancy Harper (Reynolds v. Harper), Dr. Barbara Knox (Acker v. Knox), and Dr. Debra Esernio-Jenssen (Smith v. Lehigh Valley Health Network), just to name a few.
