Fall does not make South Jersey’s worst miles safer. It makes them harder to see.
The September 17 Inquirer look at NJDOT fatal-crash data is still the map. These are the stretches to skip when you can:
• I-76 / Route 42 / I-295 merge in Camden County. Ten fatal crashes in 1.3 miles since 2019.
• I-295 in Oldmans Township.
• The Turnpike at Mount Laurel.
• I-676 before the Ben Franklin Bridge.
• Route 55 from Elk Township to Deptford. Wrong-way signs are going up. The road is not rebuilt.
• Black Horse Pike through Pleasantville and Egg Harbor Township.
• U.S. 322 in Monroe, Sicklerville Road to Coles Mill Road.
• Route 130 through Delran, Riverside, and Willingboro.
• U.S. 30 in Lindenwold.
• Berlin-Cross Keys Road.
• Route 70 through Cherry Hill.
Stay off them at 6:30–9:30 a.m. and 3:30–7:00 p.m. Add Friday night and Sunday Shore traffic. School dismissal now sits inside the afternoon window.
Three fall facts that change the drive: low sun hides brake lights, eastbound in the morning and westbound late day. Wet leaves skid. It is dark before dinner, and walkers on Route 130 and the Pike are easy to miss.
If you cannot skip the mile, do not make the light on U.S. 30 or Route 70, and give the car in front more room than you gave it in August.
One coverage check before the next trip: at least $250,000 in bodily injury, matching uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and the Limitation on Lawsuit option off the policy if you can afford it. Read the declarations page, not the commercial.
