Yesterday I had the pleasure of appearing on Telemundo Houston to explain the newly proposed $70,000 fee connected to the OPT program.

🔍 What’s being proposed?
DHS has introduced a rule that would require certain universities to pay $70,000 for each initial OPT request and $30,000 for each extension. The goal, according to the proposal, is to increase oversight of schools that participate in F‑1 programs.

🎓 Why does this matter?
OPT is a key pathway that allows international students to gain practical work experience after completing their studies. A fee of this size could impact how schools participate in the program and how accessible OPT remains for students.

Si dijiste que no trabajaste sin permiso o que no violaste estatus… y sí lo hiciste, USCIS lo puede marcar como fraude.
Eso requiere I‑601 waiver.

Heads up — some U.S. consulates are now asking for a Self‑Sufficiency Plan besides the I‑864.
It’s basically a family budget showing how your beneficiary will support themselves in the U.S. — income, rent, food, childcare, everything.

Think of it as proof of financial independence — not just your sponsor’s income.
If your case is consular, that interview abroad is your green card interview.
So make sure your financial docs and your plan match what’s in the I‑864.

Stay updated — this is part of the new public‑charge scrutiny.

Very few attorneys in Texas share my story, and I carry that with humility.

I’m a Salvadoran, foreign‑trained attorney who made her way into the Texas Bar. 🇸🇻
A Latina, bilingual, dual‑licensed lawyer.
Under 40. Mom of two little ones.
Founder of my own immigration law firm.

In Texas, only about 11% of attorneys are Hispanic/Latino.
Women make up about 40% of the bar.
Latina attorneys under 40, especially those who own a firm, are a tiny fraction of the profession.

I don’t share this with pride, but with humility and as a reminder that God opens doors we never imagined, and then asks us to hold them open for others.
