Tying the knot doesn’t end at the altar.

Marriage comes with a lot of excitement and a few important decisions that help protect what you’re building together.

A good place to start:

1. Update beneficiary designations.
Make sure life insurance and retirement accounts reflect your marriage.

2. Put a will in place.
A will helps ensure your wishes are clear and your spouse is cared for if the unexpected happens.

3. Name financial and medical decision-makers.
Powers of Attorney (medical and financial) allow you to support each other when it matters most.

Taking care of these steps early can bring peace of mind as you step into this next chapter.

At The Hatchett Law Firm, we are here to help you navigate these conversations with care and confidence, at your pace.

Incoming Lightbulb Moment 💡

In Texas, planning for someone’s care is intentionally thoughtful, not one-size-fits-all.

The law recognizes something very human: the person best suited to make medical and personal care decisions may not be the same person best equipped to handle financial responsibilities. And that’s OKAY. In fact, it’s often wise. Texas law allows these roles to be thoughtfully divided so each responsibility is carried with care, clarity, and integrity.

At HLF, we work with people who take responsibility seriously—even when it’s hard. People who show up, ask the right questions, and choose to act with intention:

Who will advocate best for my loved one’s wellbeing?

Who can manage finances with steadiness and accountability?

How do we protect dignity while building stability?

Love isn’t passive. Love does.
It plans ahead.
It puts the right people in the right places.
It makes hard decisions so others don’t have to face them alone.

Because when life gets complicated, thoughtful planning is one of the most meaningful ways we care for one another. 💛⚖️

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. His words remind us that love is active. It shows up. It keeps moving. It chooses what is right, even when it is hard.

In remembrance of Dr. King, our offices are closed today. We look forward to serving you when we return tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20, committed to love in action.

📢 Pop Quiz Time! 📢
Which of these things can a will NOT do? 🤔

A. Avoid probate court.
B. Plan for your incapacity.
C. Delay distribution of assets.
D. All of the above.

Drumroll, please... 🥁 The answer is D. All of the above! 🤯

A will is an essential foundation of an estate plan, but it has limits. On its own, it does not avoid probate, does not address incapacity during life, and does not always provide the structure families may need after a loss.

Thoughtful planning means understanding what each tool does, and what it doesn’t, so your wishes are carried out with clarity and care. Planning ahead is an act of love, and love is shown best through preparation.

At The Hatchett Law Firm, we help families build estate plans that reflect their values and protect the people they love, now and for the future.

The answer actually depends on if you even like your kids! 😁 Assuming you do, choosing a guardian is one of the most meaningful decisions a parent can make. 🤍

Texas law allows parents to designate a guardian in advance, such as someone you trust to step in with care, stability, and guidance if the unthinkable ever occurs. We encourage families to think beyond logistics and consider shared values, parenting philosophy, faith, and the ability to provide emotional and financial support.

Planning ahead is an act of love. It’s how you show up for your children, even when you can’t be there yourself. At The Hatchett Law Firm, we help families put those intentions into action, thoughtfully, legally, and with peace of mind.

Love doesn’t just say it cares. Love Does.

Today, we honor the life of Maximus 🤍 Our very first mascot, welcomed into the Hatchett home on December 4, 2014, and rowdy in all the best ways from the very beginning.

More than a dog, Maximus was a source of joy and deeply loved by the Hatchett family. His loyalty, spirit, and personality will always be part of their story.

We send our condolences to the Hatchett family and to all who loved him.

Rest easy, sweet Gladiator. 🐾🤍

Kim brings a bubbly attitude and keeps our team’s spirits high simply by showing up as herself.

As our Operations and Estate Planning Manager, she is our built-in Google, always ready with an answer and quietly keeping everything organized and moving forward. She leads with care, consistency, and kindness, and the people around her feel it.

Yesterday, we celebrated Kim’s two-year anniversary with HLF. We are grateful for the way she shows up for our clients and our team every day.

She is what it looks like to lead with heart. 🤍
