We're working on some fresh content for our website, so we thought we'd share a piece of advice that we just wrote. One of the most frequent questions we get asked is: How do personal injury lawyers charge for personal injury cases? Fair enough! Here's our answer:

If you had to pay attorneys that represent you in personal injury claims hourly (like criminal lawyers or divorce or real estate lawyers) along with court reporters and the filing of the lawsuit and to collect medical records, the insurance companies would run up your bill and your rights would go out the window. Therefore, in personal injury cases we charge only a “contingent fee.” That means that our initial consultation is absolutely free. A contingency means we only get paid if we collect a recovery on your behalf. We will even cover the cost of case expenses and wait until the case has been resolved before we receive reimbursed. We will discuss the percentage once we agree to prosecute your claim. However, if we go forward and don’t recover anything, then you don’t pay anything.

No one likes a personal injury attorney until they need one. We understand. People think lawyers are the worst – sleazy spinners and ambulance chasers. When you need a personal injury attorney, do your research. Make sure he or she is experienced. In this short video, Scott Sanes of Sanes Larkin Law talks about now insurance companies are doing their best to mitigate your damages and decrease their client’s liability - they are not looking out for your best interest - your personal attorney is. Your personal injury attorney should, of course, have deep experience and unquestionable integrity, and also should be your champion.

Spoiler Alert! Scott Sanes helped his clients win this case back in 1992. Click the link and go to the 32 minute mark to watch Houston Public Media .

Here’s some detail:

In 1992, Scott Sanes represented the survivors of Ida Lee Delany v. City of Houston lawsuit filed in Federal Court in Houston. While the Rodney King case was being tried in Los Angelos, Scott represented the surviving family of Mrs. Delany who was chased down and killed by intoxicated off-duty Houston Police Officers. The Houston case gained national attention when the City was held liable for gross negligent training for failing to get the shooter into rehab after he was recommended twice prior to the incident.

Here’s Scott being interviewed by Betty Ann Bowser back when he’d been practicing law for only 9 years. (It will be hard not to note the fashion.)
