As lawyers, we know firsthand the impact of conflict on individuals and communities, at home and in the workplace. That’s why this Conflict Resolution Day, we’re sharing a few tangible conflict resolution tips for you to take with you into the rest of the year.
💼 Refocus on Facts: Emotions are often, understandably, high during conflict. The best chance of diffusing the situation is to focus less on what you are feeling and more on the facts. Consider writing down exactly what happened or talking about it with a trusted friend.
✨ See The Other Point of View: Unlocking conflict solutions means finding common ground, even in small details. And while it can be really challenging, seeing the other party’s point of view is the key to turning dead-end arguments into productive discussions.
🤝 Step Away From Extremes: When conflict brews, extremes tend to dominate. But progress comes by shifting away from these harsh edges. Maybe not to the middle, but if one moves 60% and the other 40%, resolution becomes within reach and common ground can often be found.
🌟 Embrace Win-Win Solutions: Craft scenarios where everyone wins, softening the sting of losses. In these situations, all parties walk away feeling victorious, despite sacrifices. Again, it may be challenging during conflict, but try to focus on the positives.
