Do I Have to Shovel My Sidewalk?
If you live in Massachusetts, you know we just had a snow storm with another one coming our way early next week.
You might also be wondering if you have a legal obligation to shovel the snow in front of your house and on the sidewalk.
The answer depends on where you live. Massachusetts state law allows cities and towns to pass their own laws relating to snow and ice removal.
Some cities even impose fines if a home or business owner fails to clear snow from their property or sidewalk.
In Lynn, there is a $50 fine for not clearing snow within 10 hours after snowfall stops. In Salem, it is a $25 fine for a first offense if the snow is not removed 6 hours after snowfall stops.
