Sleep struggles are common in children with autism, but small changes can make a big impact. Establishing a predictable bedtime routine signals to their brain that it’s time to wind down. Limit screen time before bed to support natural melatonin production. Consider sensory-friendly bedding like weighted blankets or white noise machines for a more soothing sleep environment. Watch their food and drink intake—caffeine and heavy meals can interfere with rest. Lastly, address any fears or anxiety with comfort objects, soft lighting, or relaxation techniques.

Money management is a life skill that every teen should learn—but where do you start? Begin with the basics: show them how to track income, expenses, and savings with an easy method like the 50/30/20 rule. Open a bank account together and walk them through online banking and debit card use. Explain the power of credit and why a good score matters. Encourage smart spending habits by helping them distinguish between needs and wants. Finally, set savings goals together so they can experience the reward of financial discipline firsthand!

Does your child face sensory struggles? 🧩 Identifying triggers and using sensory tools like headphones or fidget toys can make a world of difference. Sometimes, we’re our own worst enemy when it comes to stress. Saying ā€œyesā€ to everything? That’s a fast track to burnout. Ignoring self-care? You can’t pour from an empty cup. Bottling up emotions? That pressure will explode eventually. Comparing yourself to others? Every caregiving journey is different, and comparison only adds pressure. Trying to control everything? Some things are simply out of your hands—focus on what you can change. Let go of these habits and watch your stress levels drop.

Mealtime shouldn’t be a daily struggle. A calm eating environment, free of loud noises and distractions, can help. Offer small, frequent meals instead of overwhelming portions. Introduce new foods gradually—exposure over time can reduce aversions. Make food fun! Cutting meals into shapes or using colorful plates can encourage picky eaters. And if eating difficulties persist, occupational therapy can provide specialized support.

Grief is hard for anyone, but for a child with special needs, it can be even more confusing. Use simple, clear language to explain loss in a way they can understand. Validate their feelings—whether they’re sad, angry, or withdrawn, their emotions are real. Maintain routines to create a sense of stability. Encourage comforting outlets like drawing, storytelling, or memory boxes. And if they need extra support, a grief counselor or therapist can provide valuable coping tools.

Who Needs a Special Needs Trust?
It’s not just for ā€œextremeā€ cases.
Here’s what matters.

The truth is: it’s not about a diagnosis or a label. It’s about whether your child relies on (or may rely on in the future) needs-based government benefits like:

• Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
• Medi-Cal
• In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)

If they do, receiving an inheritance or financial gift could jeopardize those benefits. That’s where a Special Needs Trust comes in; it’s a tool that holds assets without disrupting eligibility for these vital programs.

So even a high-functioning child with autism, epilepsy, or a learning or cognitive delay might benefit from having an SNT in place.

Every child is different, and so is every plan.
Feel free to reach out if you’re thinking through what’s right for your family šŸ’¬
