Wow! January isn't even over and we just got another $250,000.00 settlement today against a well known automotive manufacturer based on the vehicle's algorithm controlling deployment of the air bag and seat belt pretensioner. Neither of which deployed at a speed that both clearly should have. Great result for the client.

Another settlement today! $100,000.00 for a high school student who was injured when a lady made a left turn right in front of my client's car. Liability was initially disputed in this case, because the other driver hired her own lawyer and tried to claim it was my client's fault! Fortunately, I was able to shut that down, and the other driver's attorney ended up dropping the case and the other driver as a client. I was able to obtain the maximum insurance policy limits available for my client, and now she will be receiving some great funds to help her pursue her college education.

$600,000.00 settlement today! My client had only $26,000 in medical special damages, but a large loss of earnings claim. The best part is getting another great result for a client after over a year of protracted litigation, which included everything the defendant being in bankruptcy, to our getting monetary sanctions against the defendants for failing to comply with their discovery obligations. For all of you attorneys out there--Dr. Jennifer Pate (department chair of economics for Loyola University) was our retained economist, and she did an AMAZING job! Another great result for a client yesterday. Soft tissue injuries with only $17,000 in medical bills. $100,000 settlement just in time for the holidays! (For you attorneys out there-Bruce Minto did a great job!)

Great $100,000 settlement yesterday. Our client cut her foot on a rusty water meter box lid owned by a local municipality. The injury required 7 stitches and resulted in a small scar, but thankfully nothing more serious. The city brought a motion for summary judgment which we defeated. It was fun litigating the case against one of my former partners from my former firm.

$485,605.02 Verdict! Yesterday I concluded a very tough disputed liability 8 day trial in one of the toughest venues in LA County for plaintiffs (Alhambra). The case involved a 3 car accident. The defense was disputing liability for causing the accident, as well as my client's injuries (she had preexisting spine pathology that was exacerbated by the accident). After deliberating for about 4 hours, the jury came back with a terrific award for our client. Since starting the firm last year, we have a perfect 3-0 winning record on trials; winning in 3 of the absolute toughest locations for plaintiffs: Torrance, Van Nuys and now Alhambra. This firm specializes in significant injury, high exposure cases--and we aren't afraid to take it all the way through trial if need be. If you know someone who needs a real trial attorney, don't call a number you see on the back of a bus. Call me.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage ("UIM"): This might sound like a boring topic, but it has come up in a number of my cases recently and I want to get the word out. This insurance is one of several different types YOU purchase as part of YOUR auto insurance. It covers you if you are in an accident where you are not at fault and the other driver either has no insurance or minimal insurance. (CA only requires drivers to have $15,000 coverage for single person accidents!!) So if you get hit by someone with only $15k in coverage, that's the most you can usually get out of them. Typically, you have medical bills etc. that far exceed that. When you buy auto insurance, typically the UIM coverage for you is also only $15k. Why would you insure yourself for such a small amount? I recommend to all of my friends and family to call their auto insurance brokers and increase their UIM coverage to at least $100,000/$300,000. This is usually a relatively cheap upgrade, and it protects YOU in the event someone hits you and they have little or no insurance.

$76,000 verdict today on soft tissue/whiplash injury case!! After a week long trial in the Torrance courthouse with Judge Nishimoto (both known as a very tough venue and judge for plaintiffs/very conservative), I obtained an amazing verdict for my client. The pictures below show the POST-crash damage to my client's vehicle. In part based on the photos, State Farm refused to pay anything but nuisance value. Defense counsel was Deborah Peterson--State Farm Trial Attorney of the Year two years in a row, and member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Very tough adversary. With costs, we will be obtaining over $100,000 when all is said and done.
