Physical custody and visitation are terms of the past here in Colorado. When we are discussing where your children physically are, we use the phrase “parenting time”. Whether you have all of the time and your co-parent has every other weekend, you have 50/50 plan, or anything in between, the entire schedule is called “parenting time”. Your individual time is also called “parenting time”

Yes, that’s a thing. Nesting arrangements can be ideal if you want to keep the children in their family home and avoid further disruption of their lives. However, these arrangements are rife with potential disputes and pitfalls, and require significant resources since the parents also need a residence when they are not with the children.

Today's is a phrase you have heard your attorney say but may not know what it means. The Initial Status Conference or "ISC" is the first Court appearance in almost every domestic case. This date is often assigned when you file your case or modification.

Once you have your ISC date, that is the deadline to have the other party served, file your financial disclosures, and be prepared to move to the next phase of your case.

At the ISC, you should be prepared to talk about what you may need from the Court (intervention, experts, deadline extensions) and hear from the other party as well. The ISC often takes 15 minutes or less, but it is an important starting point for your case!

Your attorney may use the phrase "non-con" as you wrap up the settlement of your case. This means a "non-contested hearing." Even though you have settled, your case circumstances may require you to attend an in-person hearing for the Judge to sign off on your final settlement.

When you call for a consultation, we will ask about the opposing party on your case and whether they represent themselves or have an attorney. The term you will hear is "pro se" which simply means that they did not hire an attorney and intend to act as their own attorney throughout the proceedings.
