This post is bittersweet. After more than two decades, starting January 1, Hitt Law Firm will be unavailable to the public as Curtis Hitt begins serving as Judge for the 17th Judicial District.

Curtis has loved serving the legal needs of our clientele, which has taken him far and wide across our State, and he appreciates the trust our clients have placed in him. He truly feels it has been a privilege to serve our community in this capacity.

Even as we are excited for Curtis to serve as judge, we are confident that our clients will continue to enjoy exceptional representation as The Stuart Cearley Law Group takes the reins. The office location, telephone number (870-236-4488), and the trusty staff will remain the same, as will the commitment to providing exceptional legal service and representation to our clients. Happy New Year!

ATTENTION Recent TENNECO Employees: FREE estate planning offer

My parents got their start at Monroe/Tenneco years ago before moving on to other careers. I hated to hear of the company’s closing—I hate it for our community, and I hate it for those who are losing their employment. In such times, a strong community pulls together. In an effort to do a little something toward that end, Hitt Law Firm is offering a limited free estate planning service to anyone who worked for the company for a minimum of two years and lost their job by virtue of the Paragould plant’s recent closing. To be more specific, we will prepare one general durable power of attorney at no cost to you.

Estate planning is nothing fun to think about, but it’s something any responsible adult eventually has to consider. Wills, health care proxy appointments, living wills, beneficiary deeds, and trusts are all considerations depending on your circumstances, but the durable power of attorney is an appropriate estate planning tool for just about every circumstance. Without it, if you become incapacitated, your loved ones are left with no option but a guardianship, an expensive and sometimes contentious alternative that can be avoided simply by planning ahead with the power of attorney.

This offer is open for a limited time. If you meet the qualifications mentioned above and contact us by the end of February, we will prepare one at your direction for free. Simply call the office to get started. It’s our way of saying thank-you for your contribution to our community.

Hitt Law Firm is built upon attorney Curtis Hitt's years in the trenches of Arkansas courtrooms, first as a prosecutor, then in private practice, through thousands of cases. Not every case should go to court, but every case should be prepared as if it will. Only then can a client expect to achieve t...

Celebrate the Infinite in the Infant! Merry Christmas!

On behalf of the Arkansas Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Dan Kemp issued its most recent Per Curiam (order) yesterday, continuing the current suspension of all in-person proceedings in Arkansas's appellate, district, and circuit courts. The Court found that the continuing COVID-19 crisis necessitates this suspension for now, "and may be extended by this court as circumstances warrant." Certain emergency issues may be considered an exception to the suspension of in-person proceedings. Otherwise, though, our local courts continue to accommodate uncontested matters in chambers (without clients present), entertain urgent issues through Zoom, or continue cases altogether to a prospective date when, hopefully, the coronavirus is no longer a threat. If you have a court appearance scheduled between now and May 15, chances are that it will be continued, but check with your lawyer to be sure! Until then, stay well!

I returned from court this afternoon to be greeted by this young lady and her nephew, Tim Cochrane. Ms. Ann Herget Kelly was born in this house that now serves as my office in 1928. Tim is her sister's son. She and her siblings were born to Mable Jackson Herget, the daughter of civil war veteran Richard Jackson, who built the house in 1890. (Ann's brother Alfred is 99! Their brother Phil and his wife Mary Esther owned the house prior to our purchase.) I was honored to give Ms. Kelly and Tim a tour; I was fascinated by her sharp wit and vivid memory; and I was delighted by the stories she generously shared.

We were pleasantly surprised by this award today! We hope it means that our clients are not just satisfied with us, but also blessed through our representation. Our goal is to represent our clients effectively and treat them as courteously as we would hope to be treated. This perhaps sounds like just a bunch of blah, blah, blah, but really, we are honored and humbled by this recognition. As previously acknowledged, just saying it doesn't make it true, but we certainly strive to be the best. Thanks to Premiere, thanks to my trusty assistant, Shelbi, thanks to our clients, and thanks to all who extended their gracious support to us. We sincerely appreciate you!

Ms. Mary-Esther gave me this framed newspaper article when Shauna and I bought the Jackson-Herget house in 2011. It sure kindles the curiosity at what all this old house has seen since it was built in 1890. Can't help but chuckle at the histrionic writing style featured in the article: "The treacherous fire bug...." That's good stuff! Wish I knew when the article was published.
