The right approach depends on your family and your children’s needs. However, one of the most effective ways to plan is by using a trust.

A trust allows you to name someone you trust to manage money or property on your children’s behalf and provide guidance on how and when it should be used. Because minors cannot manage assets on their own, a trust helps ensure those resources are handled thoughtfully until they are ready.

Trusts can be created during your lifetime (a revocable trust) or through your will (a testamentary trust). A properly drafted and funded trust can be managed without court involvement and can be kept more private.

I’m a single parent of modest means—do I still need an estate plan?

Estate planning is not just about what happens to money or property. It is about making sure the right people are in place to care for your children and make decisions if you are unable to do so.
