👉For four years, I had a note taped in my office to visually remind me to contact our attorney regarding the topic that will be discussed at this free community workshop at McGee Law. Someone I know had a horrible experience when her daughter was in a car accident and hospitalized 🏥 The issues they had to deal with because their daughter was 19, in college away from home and a legal adult. Her parents were not able to assist because they did not have the documentation which would have prevented all the chaos that ensued in her unfortunate situation. For four years that note was my reminder and this month, I finally removed the note and scheduled that appt. with my child ⚖📄🖊

As you know 👉The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law protecting the privacy of a patient’s medical information. HIPAA waives most of the protections for a minor child and allows parents access to their medical information. 👉What you might not know is that once your child celebrates their 18th birthday, moves out, goes off to college - parents no longer have access 😳

🤔As parents we think, hey no matter their age - they're still my kid, live with us, we pay for their medical insurance and we're entitled to their information especially if they're incapable of making any medical decisions due to an unexpected situation.

‼️The unfortunate reality is that NONE of that matters. In the State of Florida, anyone over the age of 18 is legally considered an adult, with legal rights in making their own decisions financially, their education and medical decisions. By Law, they legally have the right to privacy just like us, parents‼️
