"2019 Returns Close After Monday
Nearly 1.5 million taxpayers across the country have until Monday, July 17, to claim their refunds for tax year 2019. For these unclaimed refunds, the IRS estimates average median refund amounts of $893.
By law, taxpayers normally have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they don't file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury. The law requires taxpayers to properly address, mail and ensure the tax return is postmarked by July 17, 2023. (As a reminder, due to the pandemic, the original 2019 tax return filing deadline was changed to July 15, 2020).
The IRS reminds taxpayers seeking a 2019 tax refund that their checks may be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2020 and 2021.
More information, including state-by-state estimates, is available on the IRS website."
