One reason why two people see the world differently even if they have the same information is, we interpret things by our past experiences, about how things should and should not be done. Past experiences usually develop into “rules” by which we live our lives. ----When our rules collide with the rules of others, it usually results in conflicts in personal or business relationships, ..... Remembering this can assist us in managing conflicts in relationships_ Difficult Conversations-Stone, Patton, Heen...............(Reaching Solutions thru Communication)

The previous quote is very applicable while participating in mediation. Parties have a better chance to come to an agreement when they take the time to listen to the other side with an open mind. Knowing their background, you may also realize why and how they came to their position. This practice will lead to your understanding the other side. You may not agree with them, but you will at least understand what they are saying, and open the door to more meaningful conversation and hopefully the road to an agreement

Repost-Feelings usually are at the center of every difficult conversation. How you express those feelings can affect the tone of the conversation, and have a direct effect on the results of that conversation. Some people act out their feelings in negative manner, vice expressing it in words. However, when you start your statement, as calm as possible, with the words “I Feel,” It puts the focus on your feelings, and makes clear that you are speaking only from your perspective. It stops the other person from thinking you are judging or accusing them. Describing issues in this manner, in terms of your feelings, can be one of the first steps towards getting things resolved. Try it sometime!
