Happy to sponsor and play in the IBEW Local 816 Golf Scramble again this year.

My grandfather was a union pipefitter, so supporting events like this has a little personal meaning for me. As a kid, I was mostly concerned with getting extra candy from the Local 184 parade float. As I got older, I came to appreciate what the union meant to my granddad and what it provided.

It was a great day with a great group of hardworking people. Thanks for having me—I appreciate the opportunity to give back and look forward to doing it again next year.

🚨 New Kentucky Criminal Law: Shhhh!

If you’ve ever served on a grand jury and thought, “I can’t wait to tell everybody what happened in there…”

Bad idea. 😅

As of July 15, Kentucky increased the penalties for unlawfully disclosing confidential grand jury information through what’s commonly known as the Crystal Rogers Act. It increased the statute of limitations for recording grand jury testimony from one year to ten years.

Grand jury proceedings are supposed to stay secret, and Kentucky just made it even more important to keep them that way.

🚨 New Kentucky Criminal Law: Stalking

No… checking your ex’s Facebook once isn’t stalking.

But Kentucky’s stalking law did change on July 15. The new law updates how stalking offenses are charged and modernizes the law to better address conduct involving social media and other forms of electronic communication.

Technology changes. Eventually, the law catches up.

🚨 New Kentucky Criminal Law: AI-Generated Sexual Images of Minors

It might surprise you to learn that, until July 15, Kentucky law didn’t specifically address AI-generated sexual images depicting minors.

Now it does.

The new law makes it a crime to create, possess, or distribute certain AI-generated sexual images depicting minors—even if no real child was used to create the image.

It’s another example of Kentucky’s criminal laws evolving to address technology that didn’t exist when many of these statutes were originally written.

Technology keeps changing. So does the law.

🚨 New Kentucky Criminal Law: The HALO Act

One of Kentucky’s new laws that took effect July 15 is called the HALO Act.

In short, it creates a 25-foot safety buffer around first responders who are actively performing their duties. The goal is to reduce interference at emergency scenes.

Before someone can be charged under the law, three things generally have to happen:

• The first responder must be actively performing official duties.
• The first responder must first tell the person to move back.
• The person must then knowingly remain within the 25-foot zone with the intent to interfere with, threaten, or harass the first responder.

One thing worth knowing: the law does not prohibit people from recording police or other first responders. The right to record remains, so long as you’re not physically interfering with their work.

Whether you agree with the law or not, it’s one of several changes to Kentucky’s criminal laws that took effect this month.

🚨 New Kentucky Criminal Law: Logan’s Law

Kentucky didn’t just rename a law on July 15.

WTH is it?

It made it harder for many violent offenders to receive parole, expanded post-release supervision, and changed parts of Kentucky’s criminal laws involving mental illness.

Highlights:

*No Automatic Early Release: Violent offenders who are unanimously denied parole are banned from receiving mandatory early reentry supervision.

*Longer Parole Wait Times: People serving life sentences must now wait at least 30 years to apply for parole, up from 25 years.

*No Split Insanity Verdicts: Juries can no longer rule a defendant insane for one part of a continuous crime but same for another.

*Back-to-Back Sentences: Judges must issue consecutive (back-to-back) sentences instead of overlapping ones for violent crimes with multiple victims.

Whether you agree with it or not, it’s one of the biggest criminal law changes Kentucky passed this year.

🚨 School starts back soon, so here’s one Kentucky law that’s pretty damn easy to miss.

As of July 15, drivers approaching a stopped school bus from the opposite direction must now stop on many four (or more)-lane roads.

The exception? If the four-lane roadway is divided by an elevated barrier or an unpaved median, traffic on the opposite side doesn’t have to stop. A center turn lane or painted center line doesn’t count.

There’s another change, too: Kentucky now allows school districts to use camera systems on school buses to identify drivers who illegally pass a stopped bus.

Here’s the thing: I’d love to meet you. But if we can avoid meeting over a stopped school bus—hell, let’s do that.

Sometimes the biggest victory is seeing someone get her life back. Proud of you, Heidi. 💚

SUCCESS STORY: From Rock Bottom to Road to Recovery. Heidi reports "On April 10, 2025, my life changed when I was arrested on drug charges. I had reached one of the lowest points in my life, but that moment became the beginning of my recovery. I entered Mountain of Hope, completed residential treatment, and continued through their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Today, I am proud to be living in recovery, actively participating in Drug Court, and attending meetings at Turning Point, where I’ve found an amazing recovery community. I also started a recovery club called Road to Recovery to encourage and support others on their journey. I will always be grateful to the women at Mountain of Hope, the Drug Court team, and my attorney, Alicia Bobo, who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself. Recovery has given me a second chance, and today I’m committed to living a life of honesty, hope, and helping others. If my story can help even one person realize that recovery is possible, then everything I’ve been through has had a purpose. I hope this inspires someone else to take that first step. Recovery is possible, and no matter how far you’ve fallen, there is always hope." We cannot love this enough Heidi! SO proud of you!! 💚
