You get told about filing. You get told about the ending. What nobody walks you through is everything between, which is exactly where the fear lives.

Filing and service. Temporary orders, when the court puts them in place. Discovery. Settlement or mediation. Then resolution, which is where many cases land without ever reaching a trial.

Timing and specifics differ between Maryland and D.C., and every case has its own rhythm. But the sequence itself is knowable.

That happens more often than people realize. A support order doesn't adjust on its own not when income drops, not when it rises, not when the parenting schedule changes, not when a child's needs change. The number stays exactly where the court left it until someone asks the court to look again.

Your daughter fell at school. The office called down the contact list and reached your ex first. You found out three hours later.

The contact list and your custody order are two separate documents. Nobody in the front office is reading your parenting plan they're reading a list that may not have been updated since enrollment.
Custody doesn't put you on it. But in Maryland and D.C., you have a right to your child's school records either way.

Four things to handle before the first week:
✅Confirm you're listed as a parent contact
✅Give the school a copy of your custody order
✅Request parent portal access in writing
✅Follow up by email so there's a record.

One parent finds a better district and signs the enrollment paperwork. The other parent finds out after the fact. By October there's a motion on the calendar.

If your case is still pending, school enrollment isn't a solo decision. Not without written agreement. Not without a court order.

If the current school genuinely isn't working, there's a right way to raise it before you enroll, not after.

You know your custody schedule by heart.

Now name the person who decides where your child goes to school.

Most parents can't and that's not carelessness. Nobody ever explained that custody is actually two separate things.

Physical custody is where your child sleeps. The schedule, the exchanges, holidays, summers.

Legal custody is who decides. School. Doctors. Religion. Consent for evaluations and services.

You can have one without the other. A 50/50 schedule does not automatically mean 50/50 decision-making. Those are two different sections of your order, and they don't have to match.

Some orders go further and name one parent as the final decision-maker when the two of you can't agree. It's usually one sentence. It's easy to miss. And it settles the argument before the argument starts.

Pull out your order this week and read the legal custody section. If it isn't clear, bring it in and we'll read it with you.
