Today, as we celebrate the birth of the United States of America, we remember not only the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but the enduring principles of liberty, self-government, and the rule of law upon which our Nation was founded.

In a letter to his wife, Abigail, John Adams wrote:

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival… It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance, by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade… Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other, from this Time forward forever more.”

Two hundred and fifty years later, his words continue to ring true.

As we gather with family and friends this Independence Day, let us honor those who secured our freedoms, appreciate those who continue to defend them, and recommit ourselves to the ideals of justice, liberty, and constitutional government that define our Republic.

This July 4th represents the Semiquincentennial Year of the United States of America; its establishment of 250 YEARS (1776 – 2026)!

This milestone commemorates the founding ideals that shaped a new nation and continue to guide its constitutional democracy.

On July 4, 1776, representatives of thirteen colonies asserted a revolutionary principle: that government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed, and that all persons are endowed with inherent rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These ideas, radical in their time, laid the foundation for the rule of law and constitutional governance.

Over the past two and a half centuries, the United States has grown, debated, struggled, and grounded itself through the adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the expansion of Civil Rights, and the enduring work of Courts, Legislatures, Executive Branches, and Citizens to more fully realize the Nation’s founding promises.

As we approach America’s 250th year, we honor the past while reaffirming our commitment to the principles that define a free and lawful society.
