Attorneys Cal Mayo and Paul Watkins of Mayo Mallette successfully defended a lawsuit brought against the University of Mississippi and the University-Oxford Airport by a private air transportation service. The jet service, which regularly operates out of the Airport, alleged that the University had agreed to lease it a portion of the Airport for its private use. The Circuit Court of Lafayette County dismissed the lawsuit, finding that the plaintiff had failed to allege the existence of an enforceable contract between the parties. The plaintiff has appealed the dismissal.

Paul Watkins recently completed a spring semester teaching Employment Discrimination at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

The course helps students understand how workplace discrimination claims are assessed, litigated, and defended. Paul supplements the class with current cases throughout the semester, keeping students engaged with recent decisions and how courts are applying the law in real time.

“I enjoy working with students because they bring new perspectives and different questions to the material,” Paul said. “Teaching also keeps me current. I’ve taught at the law school since 2021. Each week, I’m reviewing new cases and developments in employment discrimination law, and that directly informs my practice.”

We appreciate the way Paul’s role at the law school allows him to support future attorneys while staying closely connected to a practice area that remains central to Mayo Mallette’s work.

Congratulations to Mary Ann Connell on her induction into Phi Beta Kappa, one of the nation’s oldest and most respected honor societies.

After serving as university attorney for the University of Mississippi for more than two decades, Mary Ann joined Mayo Mallette as an attorney and was part of our firm for many years. Those who worked alongside her here know her as a thoughtful lawyer, generous colleague, and warm presence to all. We’re pleased to join in celebrating this well-deserved honor.

Attorney Paul Watkins of Mayo Mallette recently secured the dismissal of a lawsuit against a professor at William Carey University's College of Osteopathic Medicine in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. The professor had been accused of discriminating against the student because of his race and disability status, defaming the student, and tortiously interfering with the student's contract with the University. The student has appealed the dismissal.

In April, Cal Mayo participated in a Boot Camp CLE for Trial Lawyers at the United States Courthouse in Gulfport, Mississippi. Sponsored by the Mississippi Chapter of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the Boot Camp recreated the trial of Ethel Rosenberg, who was accused of conspiring with her husband, her brother, and others to commit espionage against the United States. The program included three federal district judges, three federal magistrate judges, two justices of the Mississippi Supreme Court, and fourteen Mississippi American College Fellows. Cal presented a lecture on the direct examination of witnesses.

Programs like this help sharpen trial skills across the profession, giving lawyers the opportunity to study advocacy, courtroom strategy, and the responsibilities that come with representing clients at trial.

Attorneys Pope Mallette and Drew Mauldin recently participated in a panel discussion at the University of Mississippi School of Law focused on judicial clerkships, alongside fellow panelists Brittany Frankel, Beth Archer, and Tamara McGee. Pope and Drew both completed federal judicial clerkships before entering private practice.

Judicial clerkships provide valuable exposure to the court system and the judicial decision-making process and are often a formative experience for young lawyers.
