John Tuska
(1931-1998)

The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art was the first art museum in Kentucky to have as its primary focus the documentation of the state's cultural history. More than 1000 works now form this collection dating from the mid 18th century to the present which contains the works of the most important artists with connections to Kentucky by birth, education or residency.

John Regis Tuska, one of the most distinguished artists to have lived and worked in Kentucky, was born in Pennsylvania and raised in New York. He earned his degrees from the prestigious ceramic program at Alfred University. He moved to Kentucky in 1960 and began teaching at the University of Kentucky in 1963 as a professor of art until his retirement in 1993.

Tuska worked in a wide variety of media including ink drawing, bronze sculpture, cast paper and ceramics. His versatility allowed him to explore his favorite theme, the human figure.

His work is in many public collections including the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, IN, the Krannart Art Museum, IL, the Museum of Art, State College, PA, University of Kentucky Museum of Art and the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art.
