We urge people in the greater Kansas City area to be on the lookout for ticks and the potential illnesses that can come from a tick bite.

Tick bites are on the rise across the Midwest — and Kansas & Missouri families should be aware and stay vigilant against tick-borne illnesses.

According to recent news stories. tick bite-related visits are affecting families across the metro this spring, with tick-borne illnesses tracking higher in recent years.

While most tick bites do not lead to an illness, prevention is still the BEST protection.

Before spending time outdoors, remember to:

• Use EPA-registered insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves and pants when possible
• Check yourself, children and pets after being outside
• Shower soon after outdoor activity
• Remove attached ticks carefully and as soon as possible

Ticks in Kansas can spread illnesses such as ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia and alpha-gal syndrome.
