🤱newborn hunger cues👩‍🍼

Whether you are breast or bottle feeding, catching newborn hunger cues earlier can prevent a lot of frustration and lead to an overall better feeding experience.

Early cues look like rooting (turning their hide side to side, opening their mouth wide), licking lips or smacking/sucking mouth movements, and bringing hands to mouth. Crying is a late hunger cue.

If you miss early hunger cues, it can become much more difficult to get the baby latched well as they are often frustrated and very wiggly at that stage. You can put it right in their mouth, and they will still struggle to get it (iykyk!).

If baby is too upset to latch, focus on calming first. Place baby skin to skin, sway, rock, or shush, and try again. If you need to step away, place baby in a safe space or hand baby to your partner and catch your breath.

Feeding babies is a huge learning curve. There is intrinsic, instinctual knowledge you and baby both have- but putting it into practice is another thing entirely. Don't stress if this takes practice and lots of support. You're not meant to do any of this alone!

The PKU screen, or newborn heel prick test ✨️

What is it for & what are the risks?

The PKU screen is a standard newborn test that checks for dozens of medical conditions. Some conditions include phenylketonuria (PKU), galactosemia, maple syrup urine disease, congenital hypothyroidism, Sickle cell disease, homocystinuria, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and more. These conditions, if undiagnosed in a timely manner, can lead to poor outcomes.

The test is collected by a nurse or phlebotomist, who will first warm the baby's heel, prick it using an infant lance, and then apply the drops of blood to fill 5 circles on a piece of paper. The newborn is typically 24hours old when this test is completed. This paper will then be dried in the lab before being mailed to one of the labs in the country that is capable of completing the PKU screen.

The test is very low risk. Some may not be comfortable completing this test if they have concerns about what happens to their baby's blood & DNA after the test is completed. You may have concerns about the pain the heel prick poses for your baby. To reduce pain, ensure that the heel is first warmed before the prick is carried out, so that blood flows easily and quickly. If you are nursing, latch your baby while they are pricked. Studies have shown a measureable reduction in pain when infants are breastfed through painful procedures.

In Nebraska, there is no opt-out option if you are planning to get a birth certificate. The certificate will not be issued until the screen has been completed.

What are the PKU regulations in your state? Did nursing during the test help your baby through it? Did the newborn screen catch anything that you are grateful for?

I'm not talking about egg whites in the way your food wellness influencer is 🫣

Egg white is often a descriptor used to describe fertile, or peak-type, cervical mucous. What does that term really mean? Egg white mucous refers to mucous that is lubricative (slippery), clear when finger tested or observed, and ideally stretches 1in or more.

Why does it matter?
The environment is otherwise hostile and s***m do not survive long. Peak type mucous acts as a highway and helps the s***m reach its destination. It also acts as a protective barrier, adjusting the pH to be more s***m-friendly.

Peak type mucous, in a healthy cycle, will show up a few days to a week before ovulation and will often increase in amount, stretch, or frequency as ovulation comes closer. This mucous is one initial warning sign that ovulation is approaching. If you are seeing this type of mucous, consider that day fertile!
