This weekend it was a tremendous honor to be a part of the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet where they recognized my mother, Harriett T. Johnson and my aunt, Arlene “Connie” Belfield for being the first two African Americans to integrate Patrick Henry High School in Doswell, VA. My sister and I were able to speak about how courageous and strong my mother was and how it transcended down through her legacy. This event was a great reminder that we must remain steadfast in our pursuit for justice and equality. In order to make progress, we must never forget those who have sacrificed so much before us. Here, it was two teenage girls from a small town in Virginia who changed history. They were strong and courageous beyond measure. It is an honor to be apart of such a legacy. We must remember to teach our children about “our” history and those who came before us who fought for the civil liberties that we have today. Although we still have a long way to go, if our children do not know our history and how we have overcome so many injustices in the past, history is destined to repeat itself. Harriett T. Johnson you are and will always be my hero!
