The national conversation over artificial intelligence safeguards is intensifying, and one Florida case sits squarely at its center. This week, as AI companies and lawmakers in Washington began publicly calling for stronger guardrails on the technology, that shift echoed the very argument at the heart of a federal lawsuit against OpenAI.

The suit was filed on behalf of the family of Tiru Chabba, one of two men killed in the April 2025 shooting at Florida State University. It alleges that OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, aided the gunman in planning the attack.

Representing the Chabba family are Osborne, Francis & Pettis and The Strom Law Firm, among the co-counsel on the case. Attorney Greg Francis welcomed the growing scrutiny of AI. "It's the responsible thing to do," he told WCTV, pointing to the tragedy at Florida State as an example of what can happen when the right protocols aren't in place.

The discovery phase is expected to begin soon, with the possibility that other lawsuits filed against the company in federal court could be consolidated down the line.
