When starting a nonprofit, it is natural to feel hesitant about big moves like hiring a lawyer, applying for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, or asking for funding.

The key to building a successful organization is shifting your mindset from "What if this fails?" to "How can we make this happen safely and correctly?"

Taking your vision seriously means putting the right legal, structural, and compliance measures in place so fear does not hold your mission back. When your legal foundation is secure, you can focus on fundraising, scaling, and making a real impact.

At Chisholm Law Firm, PLLC, we help founders nationwide with nonprofit formation, 501(c)(3) applications, trademark protection, and ongoing legal compliance.

If your first attempt at something doesn't go smoothly as a nonprofit founder, do not be discouraged. Building a charitable organization is a process, and early setbacks are often just valuable learning opportunities.

Whether you are hosting your first fundraiser, setting up governance, or navigating federal compliance, initial challenges are a normal part of growth. The key is to make necessary pivots and stay committed to your mission.

At Chisholm Law Firm, PLLC, we help founders across the United States properly establish their nonprofits, secure 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, protect trademarks, and navigate ongoing legal compliance so they can grow with confidence.

When people invest money in something, they take it seriously. If you are launching a nonprofit, charging for your events, programs, or services can actually increase engagement and commitment from the people you serve.

Scholarships and free resources have their place, but charging a fee ensures your participants show up, stay engaged, and put the work into practice. It also creates a sustainable revenue model to keep your organization running.

Building a lasting nonprofit requires strong strategy, complete regulatory compliance, and the right legal foundation. Our team at Chisholm Law Firm helps founders turn their vision into properly established organizations equipped for long-term growth.

Many founders believe running a nonprofit means offering everything for free. However, charging for services or goods is a legal and practical way to build a sustainable organization.

Even small fees help fund operations, support staff, and keep your mission alive. When people invest in your services, they also value them more. Building a lasting impact requires a solid revenue model, proper entity structuring, and compliance with federal tax-exempt regulations.

Here is why we are so passionate about helping nonprofits win.

12.8 million jobs. 10% of all private sector employment. $3.7 trillion raised annually (at the time of this recording).

The nonprofit sector is not a footnote in our economy — it is one of the most powerful chapters.

And every single one of those organizations started with one founder who decided to begin. Grab a FREE copy of Attorney Chisholm's best selling nonprofit book at StartYourNonprofit.com

Private foundation founders — if you believe funding your organization yourself means the IRS rules don't apply to you, this video is an important watch.

Funding it alone doesn't change the rules. It changes how important it is to understand them.

Chisholm Law Firm specializes in helping private founders give correctly — so your resources reach the right places in the right ways.

Attorney Audrey K. Chisholm lives this principle every day.

She gives freely — her advice, her encouragement, her support to causes she believes in. And when she rebuilt her nonprofit board, she intentionally brought in generous people who show up and lend their talents and experience wholeheartedly.

The board she has now is a direct reflection of the generosity she leads with.

Like produces like. Generosity attracts generosity.

If you're starting a nonprofit, you're most likely forming a public charity — even if you haven't used that term yet.

Here's what that actually means:
✅ You run programs that directly benefit the community
✅ You raise funds from a broad base of donors, grants, and events
✅ Your board is structured to serve the public — not a small insider group

And here's something many founders don't know: public charity status isn't permanent. The IRS evaluates it over a five-year period using a public support test. If your organization doesn't receive at least one-third of its support from the general public, you could be reclassified as a private foundation — with much stricter rules.

Swipe through our latest carousel to see what a public charity is, who qualifies, and how the IRS determines your classification.
