Jimmy Buffett did what the experts tell you to do: he set up a roughly $275 million trust instead of leaving his fortune to chance. But he named two co-trustees who don't agree, his widow and his longtime financial advisor, and now they're in court trying to remove each other, with millions in legal fees piling up. The lesson most people miss: a trust isn't automatic peace. If you put two people in charge and don't say who breaks a tie, you can leave your family a fortune and a fight at the same time. Free guide in bio: 5 Estate Mistakes That Tear Families Apart. Who would you trust to run your estate? Curious who you'd pick.

Whitney Houston did the smart thing: years before her death, she set up a trust to protect her only daughter, Bobbi Kristina, releasing the inheritance slowly over time. But she wrote that plan in 1993 and never updated it as life changed. When Bobbi Kristina died young, most of that carefully planned inheritance had barely begun to reach her, and years of family conflict followed. The lesson most people miss: an
estate plan isn't 'set it and forget it.' The one you wrote years ago may not fit the life you have now. Free guide in bio: 5 Estate Mistakes That Tear Families Apart. When was the last time you updated your plan? Be honest in the comments.

Tupac Shakur was murdered at 25, and for almost 30 years, no one was ever charged. This year, a jury finally convicted Duane "Keffe D" Davis — not because of new evidence, but because of his own words, spoken publicly over 18 years. Here's the full story, and the legal lesson every business owner should take from it: what you say and put in writing doesn't disappear.

We lost a legend. Her family didn't ask for flowers. They asked people to give to her Imagination Library.
She gave her whole life. And she made sure it kept going after.
That doesn't happen by accident. Somebody has to write it down.
Rest easy, Dolly. 🦋

Biggie never got to open his restaurant. His daughter just did.
He talked about it before he was killed in 1997. He was 24.
Nearly 30 years later, T’yanna Wallace is opening Big Poppa’s in Manhattan. She held the tasting on March 9th — the anniversary of the day he died. Her mother was there. Her own daughter was there. 🤎
But here’s the part I had to tell you as an estate attorney.
While that restaurant is being built, his catalog is in court. His mother passed in 2025. Fifteen days before she died, her will was amended — different executor, different outcome for the grandchildren. It’s being challenged right now.
When a judge ruled on a related fight this month, she opened her opinion by quoting Biggie’s own lyric about keeping family and business separated.
29 years later. Still fighting.
📌 Two things:
Being somebody’s child doesn’t give you the right to their name. Your daddy’s barbershop name. Your mama’s catering business. If nobody registered it, your kids may not be able to use it.
Update your plan while you’re well. The late change is the one that ends up in front of a judge.
Legacy isn’t what you leave. It’s what actually makes it through.

Suburban Girl in the City: Austin Edition!

This time Suburban Girl made her way to the West Side for Urban Myth’s Rib Fest in Austin, Chicago!
And listen… ALL the food was good! 😋 But I have to give a special shout-out to Chef Lamar and Sulma’s Unlimited LLC. The food was DELICIOUS. Always a winner in my book! 🙌🏾

So many great vendors, great food, and great energy. And I cannot forget Precious Smith & The West Connect — the band was AWESOME! 🎶 They definitely kept the vibe going.

And since we are talking about the West Side… did you know I meet clients out west in Westchester, Illinois? 👀
So if you have been saying, “Attorney Reynolds, you are too far from me” — maybe I am closer than you think!

Come see about me! ⚖️❤️

Paris Jackson just got a judge to make lawyers hand back $625,000. 👀

The rule that decided it is the same one that decides what YOUR family’s executor gets paid.
The executors of Michael Jackson’s estate paid $625K in bonuses to outside law firms. Paris asked one question: why? Nobody had a good answer. Judge called it arbitrary. Give it back.

In Illinois, an executor gets “reasonable compensation.” No percentage in the statute. The judge decides — based on what you can DOCUMENT.

Serving as executor for your mama right now? Write down your hours. Every bank trip. Every call. If a sibling challenges your fee, “I did a lot” is not an answer.
That fee is taxable income to you. Your inheritance usually isn’t.
Executor right now? Drop a 🙋🏽‍♀️ — it’s harder than people know.
Let’s protect what you built. 🤎

Suburban Girl in the City: Hyde Park Edition! ☕️

Today I stopped by for a yummy coffee and a much-needed caffeine boost. Apparently, it worked a little too well because I left there with so much energy I decided I was going to cook dinner. 😂
But then I thought… nobody ain't got time for that! 😂

So I headed over to Uncle Joe’s for some Jamaican food and let them handle dinner instead. Thanks for the assist. YUM! 😋
Another good day in Hyde Park!

P.S. Somebody give me some West Side recommendations! Where should Suburban Girl in the City go next? 👀 Thanks!
