This Women’s History Month, The Times and Democrat honors the life and legacy of the late Honorable Karen Williams — a true trailblazer, devoted mother, and pillar of her community.
Judge Williams made history as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, ultimately rising to the role of Chief Judge. Her brilliance, integrity, and leadership left an indelible mark on the legal profession. She was widely regarded as a leading candidate for the United States Supreme Court before courageously stepping away from the bench following her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s.
But beyond her extraordinary legal career, Karen Williams was so much more — a phenomenal mother, a loyal friend, a woman of deep Christian faith, and a steadfast supporter of the very community that shaped her and that she chose to raise her children in.
Today, her son, Attorney Charlie Williams, carries forward her legacy. Through his work, he strives to embody the same compassion, strength, and commitment to service that defined his mother’s life — serving others with a caring heart, giving back to the community, and always placing family at the center.
At The Williams Firm, we are honored to continue the legacy of Karen Williams — a legacy of excellence, faith, and unwavering dedication to others.
Her story continues to inspire us all.
