Most people protect their stuff. The house. The cars. The boat. They might even have a small life insurance policy through work.

What they almost never protect is the asset that makes everything else possible: their ability to earn a paycheck.

That's the gap I see most often when families come in for a planning review. They have homeowner's coverage. They have auto. They have a couple hundred thousand of group life through their employer. And they have nothing — or close to nothing — that protects their income if they get hurt or sick and can't work.

I'm posting this the day before Thanksgiving. I hope that you will be bold with your family and ask whether everyone has their living trust and estate plan done. No one ever wants their children or parents to go through probate.
