If the OC Register had a comments section most people would be screaming for the judge's head, but to me the real blame, if this suspect really did murder his ex-girlfriend, goes to the prosecutors. The OCDA has serious problems, and a very compliant "tough on crime" public enabled it.

Lurid as this story is, I do believe issues of mental capacity and intent as to end-of-life documents will become a bigger issue as more Americans live longer and longer. These issues will intrude into the political field, I suspect.

People would rather have overcrowded jails than higher crime rates; one problem is hidden, the other means your patio furniture gets stolen. The fact remains that a decent society doesn't just stuff prisoners in overcrowded, understaffed jails and prisons.

Orange County’s jail population decreased substantially last year, mirroring a statewide dip in the number of inmates, which a study released Wednesday said is the result of a controversial California law.
